A rather lo-fi affair, presentation wise, by Markus Schwill, who lived back then right around my corner in Germany. Not a bad one, but it could have been better presented. Markus is still around playing music as far as I know.

Also on Suitcase (see yesterday) was another compilation for which I submitted a track around 1990-1991. It was released in 1996 but apparently not the right version (which I never saw) and then all of a sudden in 2008 'Paper & Plastic' arrived, in a box created by Abo (of Yeast Culture and Petri Supply). This is a small edition of around 70 or so, and there is supposedly another, more regular edition. I won't post this, but urge to try a copy yourself from the label . Eric Blevins of Suitcase Recordings had his own music project, All Fours. With him and TAC I traded a lot of music, which was supposed to be a LP. I have no back up copies of tracks, just a bunch of 4 track tapes. Maybe, just maybe one day they will appear, if Eric gets his act together, again. But I present the visual I submitted, quite an elaborate one, I'd say, to extent of reworking possibilities. All shown here.

Ok, in the last 2 days some interesting things happened: Lunhare from Italy came first with the idea to release the works connected the 'Assemblage' as a double CDR, so ofcourse I prefer to do and won't post them as free downloads. Then Blossoming Noise asked me to compile a box of 10 cassettes with historical works by Kapotte Muziek, which of course I very much like. There will be some stuff that is hard to find (not yet posted on this blog), also anywhere. For instance, it might (!) include this compilation, which I couldn't find on the internet. Its released by Suitcase Recordings and has some great names, like Blowhole, Illusion Of Safety, Due Process, Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock, Big City Orchestra and many more. The picture here is from the addition booklet: a set of pages with many infos on the various artists. Click to enlarge and read what my piece was all about. To hear it, you may have to wait a while.

A series of five thematic compilations released by Lor Teeps/Tapes, masterminded by Jan-Kees Helms, who is back on track with this label and his own music these days. Volume two and thee delt with sound poetry. Later I used the similar idea of my track for the 'Murmer' release. Found it here

This was announced as a sunday afternoon with Roel Meelkop, so there was a solo set by him, one by Peter Duimelinks, one by Freiband and then also Kapotte Muziek and Goem. Each played around 20-25 minutes. It snowed on the way back. A nice cosy afternoon with Roel Meelkop indeed. The comic you see here, Roel and me believe, was made after this occasion, by Sascha de Haan - it might very be at another concert of Roel in Worm. Players: Frans de Waard, Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop. Gig 66 Worm, Rotterdam, The Netherlands

XX-XX-1990

One of those small things I am particularly proud of: Assemblage. This 7", released by Korm Plastics in an edition of 200 copies, had everything to do with my ever present interest in sound recycling. This is what I did when I started working with Christian Nijs in 1984, and perhaps to this very day still is a major interest. So I'd planned this 7" with sound contributions by Jos Smolders, SBOTHI, Yeast Culture and Kapotte Muziek. All images and sounds contained in the project were free to be used by anyone else. Apart from various works by Kapotte Muziek - posted very soon - I think only Con-Dom used a bit on his LP 'The Eigth Pillar' (which was recentely re-issued on CD, but Tesco refuses send me a copy, out of battles which date back to... well perhaps as early as these releases on Korm Plastics). The cover was nice too: we had on the V2 photocopier the layout with empty spaces and took everything we could find in the office and stuck that on the machine, so every cover is unique. I still have a few unused (even a copy or 2 for sale). The guy who blogged this record here didn't know if it should be on 33 or 45 rpm, which honestly I don't remember either. I think it was cut at 33 rpm, but you'll have both 33 and 45 rpm in that post. As said soon I will post the various releases Kapotte Muziek made of this material.

Much to my surprise, this tape was recentely re-issued, on cassette by Abo on his recentely revived Incubator label. Good choice, as this is a great compilation, with a great line up: Smersh, Dva Met Dva Nichts, Mailcop, Lieutenant Caramel, Achim Wollscheid, Arcane Device, Hands To, THU20, Dva Met Dva Nichts* & Post Destruction Music, Null, Dwarf Farm, Merzbow, Arcane Device, IOSS, Winter, Kapotte Muziek, Gregory Whitehead, Dva Met Dva Nichts* & Emil Beaulieau, Mission Papua Holland and Yeast Culture. Popular on the blogs too. here is one here and here

A split LP usually means that on one side there is a band and on the other another. Its of course also a city in former Yugoslavia. That's what depicted on the cover of the Kapotte Muziek/Beequeen split LP. The Beequeen has been re-issued by Plinkity Plonk on 'Seltenturm'. The Kapotte Muziek is an edit of a concert from September 1993 at De Melkfabriek. When we come to that, I'll post the entire concert recording (plus I don't have the master of this side at my disposal). Wachsender Prozess is a label run by Thomas Beck, still going strong with releases and concerts. It was an edition of 300 copies.

Whereas several stories meet up. Berlin's Podewil invited Audio.NL, the label ran by the three members of Goem (incidentelly the same three as Kapotte Muziek) to organise an event for them, which we did. It included Radboud Mens, Goem, Andreas Tilliander and Frank Bretschneider. Ausland, a small nice venue in Berlin got wind of this and asked Kapotte Muziek to be there a day early and play solo and as Kapotte Muziek. Podewil didn't allow Radboud to play at Ausland, but couldn't stop Kapotte Muziek from doing so. For whatever reason I no longer recall Roel didn't join Kapotte Muziek (or Goem) on this particular occasion, but for our concert we played Radboud as our third member. It made quite a difference to our music as you can hear on the recording. Players: Frans de Waard, Peter Duimelinks, Radboud Mens. Gig 83 Ausland, Berlin, Germany

As far as I can remember this is the very first time I was ever on a record. The idea behind Contactdisc was the same as with Motop: you pay some money and you can fill up a few minutes of music on a LP, and you get some free copies. It was I think 200 guilders for 2 minutes and you get 10 LPs - which is a pretty bad deal, come to think of it. Anyway, I was proud. Fobo Fobie is the fear to have fear. The only thing to fear is fear itself. The voice at the beginning is Burroughs - Christian was heavily influenced by him.

A large folder with a magazine and many mail art contributions sums up the package of Wolfangel. Released by Peter Zincken with whom I started having contact in 1985 or so, and still goes strong with his Dr. Bibber, Odal and Stront Tapes. Large item, lots of music. The Kapotte Muziek track isn't that special.

Lo-profile was Extrapool's sort of 'education' programm, in which something from art of musical history was central, and then someone talked about it, some film and some music. On this day it was musique concrete and Jos Smolders talked about, there was a screening of 'Kick That Habit', the more than excellent Möslang/Guhl film and the 100th concert of Kapotte Muziek. Well, with some hindsight: that was wrong, it was number 98. I have no idea why we thought it was number 100, but there was a great 'broken cake' for the audience made by Maaike, and a special wallpaper made by me. Players: Frans de Waard, Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop. Gig 98 Extrapool, Nijmegen, The Netherlands

Now here is a compilation that I am particulary proud of. Not just because it was released on Korm Plastics, but also becuase of its idea. I made a graphical score, with four separate lines of images and a duration, and asked five people to make an interpretation of it: THU20, Das Synthetische Mischgewebe, Alain Basso, Massimo Toniutti, Hiofawra. The sixth one was of course by Kapotte Muziek. In July 1988 I booked a week in an eigth track studio, AAwal, ran by Jasper Frenken of Mission Papua Holland for the small amount of 100 guilders for a whole week (5 days). Jasper would come in on monday morning, explain the basics and then leave, thus leaving you complete freedom. I didn't have that many ideas of what I wanted to do, so for at least three days I played about on the synths and trying out sound effects. The only two really finished pieces was one for 'Motop 1' (we'll come that in May) and 'The 4 Elements' version, which I still like a lot. I should have posted this in December, because in December 1988 I published this tape, but I overlooked this. Luckily the CDR version was from January 1999. In 1999 I worked for Staalplaat and re-issued all cassettes as CDRs. It was a bit hard to find this online, so I uploaded it myself.

Somewhere in 1985 I found a local man named Joy Arpots organised the local version of Tegentonen, and if I'm not mistaken it had Christian Marclay on the programm, which blew me away. I introduced myself to him, and found he had a program on the squat radio station. I started listening and soon was asked to join him and Dolf Mulder (who to this day writes for Vital Weekly) to play new cassette releases. On May 21st 1987 we had our 100th show, in absence of Joy and Dolf. I invited some people to play a two minute concert by phone, with an introduction by phone by Joy (who was out interviewing Beasty Boys) and as Kapotte Muziek I played some collage stuff from records. A pretty chaotic broadcast, which I released on a small subsidairy of Korm Plastics, called Art & Noise Editions, after the name of the programm. I am sure I never sold any of these, and gave all the participants a free copy. It features KvO (from Prilius Lacus), Irun Sneeze, The Nolistics, Heer PJ, Suicidal Squad, Y Create, De Fabriek, DMDN, Odal, Scar and Fasten Bulbous. I couldn't find it online, so I uploaded it myself.

Although its not entirely certain, but on this day in 2002, Christian Nijs took his own life. I wrote about that here. Many of the very early works have the musical ideas of Christian to it. He recorded the main bulk of sounds, and my crude mixing was more a minor thing. For many years I though to write something more extensive about him, but, like so many other plans, I never got around doing it. As said on that page Christian also recorded as Factor 6, and I am not entirely 100% sure if what you can download here, is the complete discography of his work. It includes the two tapes he released on his own Disaubuse Transmissions, plus a track from a compilation on his label and a track from Wolfsangel. There might have been some other musical contributions to other compilations, but I don't have them. He also contributed two written pieces to my pre-Vital fanzine Nul Nul, and a a graphic contribution to the 1986 calender. The release 'The Heretic' on Opus Dei Society is not my Christian. He sort of promised me something back then, but at one point said I should record something myself, which I did. Hilaire Brisdak is on discogs mentioned as the man behind Factor 6: that is not true at all, and another example of the fact the discogs has quite some mistakes, which nobody cares to repeat and everybody loves to repeat.
Anyway, in his own solo music, I think Christian was a fine son of Maurizio Bianchi, and could have made some nice stuff. Every now and then I still think of him, with an odd mixture of sentimentality and distance.

You may see more of these entries where it says Kapotte Muziek Unit 02, 03, 04. I know I made myself Kapotte Muziek Unit 02, and Christian Nijs was Unit 01. I think 04 was Jac van Bussel, otherwise (still!) known as DMDN and the man of Midas Music. I must admit I forgot who the others were. Perhaps one was Peter de Smet, the man behind Therapie, a label from Belgium. He worked as A Violated Body and was a member of Zweiter Korps. He and Jac used to supply me with tapes of rhythm. De Smet also organised an event where Jac and I played as Death Pact, which was so poorly attended that we got paid a box of cassettes, since 'we could sell them at the V2 store', where Jac and I volunteerd. When V2 moved to Rotterdam, the box was thrown away: none were sold. Nice compilation however!

I was never a big fan of the communist inclinations of De Koude Oorlog, a label from Den Helder; maybe it was all a joke of some kind. We can no longer ask the guy who ran it, as labelowner Dikyl Broboj died a couple of years ago. He seemed a nice guy and his released some nice tapes. Various are to be found on the internet, including this one compilation. It also includes a track by Post Destruction Music, my short lived power electronics 'group' - now that was quite a joke!

XX-XX-XXXX

To start the new year, there is first the sad case of all things lost. Back in the old days there was never a lot of money of course, so in those days I didn't make a copy of track sent out to compilations. Some of those went away before releasing anything so we must consider these tracks lost. In one case I have the box with cover, but no more the tape. So maybe someone out there has this.

Labels that got tracks but which were never released are Central Tapes (Kapot Produkt 10), Reseaus Phallus (Kapot Produkt 22), Los Obreros Del Sonido (Kapot Produkt 47), Baptism Productions (Kapot Produkt OOH), Broken Flag ((Kapot Produkt OOI), RRRecords (Kapot Produkt OAC - this was a version of John Cage's 'Variations 1'), Beast 666 (Kapot Produkt OAE), JFK (Kapot Produkt OAH), TV Sonorite (Kapot Produkt OAJ), Audio Virus (Kapot Produkt OBC), Tragic figures (Kapot Produkt OBM), Ignorance Is Bliss (Kapot Produkt OBP), P. Moreira (Kapot Produkt OBQ - no doubt this is a person's name, rather than a label's name), Absurd (Kapot Produkt OBU).

Also in the pipeline was a LP by Suitcase Recordings together with TAC and All Fours. Suitcase released a compilation CD which we'll get to later (which was to be out on cassette in the early nineties) and I was told they would be releasing the LP too, but now on CD, but now all communication is off again. It was to be (Kapot Produkt ORK).

One compilation that was released, and of which I still have the cover, but not the tape is: Kapot Produkt 0BA: 'Aktion Fur Platte' on 3 Into 6 Volume 5 (c60 - Clockwork Tapes CT)

Also released but lost is the Interaction release. The details were
Kapot Produkt OBE: INTERACTION (2xc46 - 1990)
Sounds For Consciousness Rape SFCR 005
Industrial Therapy Unit itu 20
(these two have to be played simultanously)

I know two people who have either one of them, but seemingly refuse to make me a copy. Eric Lanzillota added this one to Discogs but he says he 'gets so many requests to make copies' that he can't do it. The other tape (on Sounds For Consciousness Rape) was owned by the person running the Nostalgie-de-la-boue.blogspot but apparently its lost there (I'm sorry I said something else). If anyone has them, please let me know. I do have the cover as you can see above.

Maybe I'll find some of these later on and there will be surely a post with recovered tracks and hopefully I can add some of this lost list. There are plenty of tapes here and I know I recorded bits on cassettes that I got when I was compiling compilations, but in some cases I lost the note that I made, so it still needs a bit of searching.
