The competing team in town was Roger Waters, who had a few more customers than Kapotte Muziek (I assume, judging on middle-aged grey men in the train on my way back), but we played for a small and very attentive audience, a short set of Kapotte Muziek, going further with our extreme microphonics. Roel and I also played solo sets, so we kept them all around 20 minutes. No pictures were taken, just a recording. Players were: Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard. We played in Brussels as part of a long afternoon with five people. Kapotte Muziek, THU20, Zebra, Jos Smolders and DJ DMDN, so most of the five people played three times. It went really well and we're all happy with the whole event. Certainly something to be repeated. But somehow my recording failed. I am not sure what I can save from it, but its full of glitches, silence and a bit of music. I have to wait and see what Jos recorded of it. More later. The final entry for now! Staalplaat organised an event at Korzo Theatre in Den Haag called Masterclass with performances by Etant Donnes, BmB Con, Charlemagne Palestine, Pita, Fredy Beckmans, Mika Vainio and we did our very first workshop. We had 9 participants, including Meeuw Muzak and Radboud Mens. Quite a lot of people, but it looked great. This zip includes the concert and the various sounds people recorded. Staalplaat also released a 3"CD where we have a small piece from our Kaiserlautern concert. Players were: Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard. When Peter and I got back from our May 1993 tour we had no immediate plans to continue playing concerts as Kapotte Muziek, but our mutual friend Anton Viergever thought it would be a good idea to play at a festival he was organising called 'Electric Storm', at an art space called De Melkfabriek. It was a sunday early afternoon concert, around coffee time (well as the flyer shows us 15:00!), so the concert started with coffee cups and eating pastry. I think we had a great mixing board, in which also sound was running from DFM Radio, which Peter occasionally added to the mix. Still a great recording. An edited version was released on the Split LP (with Beequeen on the other side) by Wachsender Prozess. Players were: Peter Duimelinks and Frans de Waard. So Kapotte Muziek did some strange things, like playing on the railstation in Rotterdam but this concert beat them all. Steffan de Turck (also known as Staplerfahrer) organised a series of acoustic noise concerts in the streets of ZXZW festival in Tilburg (now called Incubate and moving further and further away from what I think is underground, although they label themselves as underground) and we were one. Actually it turned out alright and I released a 3"CDR on My Own Little Label (see/buy here) thanks to the recording and mixing of Jos Smolders. But someone made three films and put them on youtube. Tomorrow Roel and me will embark for an one-off gig as Zebra in Idrija in Slovenia, and perhaps its a coincidence, but in 2006 we played together this gig in Xanthi, Greece. We were invited, as Zebra, to play at a baptism party. We arrived two days before. The first night we played at some squat like thing. I think I did a Freiband set, and Roel played a solo Goem gig (his only to this date). The next day we played as Kapotte Muziek in Xanthi Folk Museum. The recording is not top notch, with some hiss. On sunday the baptising gig and on monday the best Zebra gig to date in a bar in Thessaloniki. We didn't make any money, but greeks bearing gifts: I still wear the coat they gave me. The other obscure stuff are birthday tapes. As you saw with Korm Plastics Canada, where I did one for Al Lincoln Roy, I did more. All of them had hand made covers, so no covers here, but you find the five I still saved as a copy. Not the best quality around of course, but never heard by anyone. These five are birthday tapes for Peter Zincken (Odal), Peter Schuster (Tesendalo), Bart Hanselaar (of many name-fame), RRRon Lessard and Freek Kinkelaar (still my buddy in Beequeen). I think the last one was a four track tape, so that he could make all sorts of mixes himself. This is just one of them.

Today and tomorrow a look at some obscure, private stuff. Bake Records was my CDR label when I worked for Staalplaat, having released over 60 CDRs by various artists. Less known is the fact there was a small series, with catalogue number 00A, 00B etc of very limited stuff. Today the whole story:

00A Kapotte Muziek - Cardioupdate
Using sound material from the various Anathesia stages, some of which were generated for Cefas van Rossem, an old friend who once gave me tapes of heart simulation sounds. This particular CDR was made for his birthday and marriage in 1999 in an edition of 2. It is also on the Blossoming Noise 10 cassette box.

Here a case where I mailed some sound material to someone to rework, in this case Stefan Schwab of Tonspur Tapes and the band Context. This on side one, and side two I work with sounds from Context. Later on Context also released a tape with various shorter pieces of collaborations, and there is also one with Kapotte Muziek. That one is here.

There weren't that many collaborations with Odal's Peter Zincken. But here is one that is pretty rare. When I moved direction with Korm Plastics, one of the ideas ws to sell stuff in advance of release and give those buys something extra. So when Korm Plastics announced the release of Odal's 'The Choice Of A New Generation', people who paid upfront got a free fifteen minute of work by Odal & Kapotte Muziek. Apparently 12 were made.

KPC 003 and KPC 007 were released in an edition of 2 copies, so true rarities. The others were editions of 50 copies. I hope Not Half and John Hudak don't mind putting their work in here. I have no cover for KPC 007: it got lost, I think when releasing these on CDR.

And the finally a look at various collaborative efforts. The first is my work with Merzbow. I corresponded with Masami Akita since 1985 when he submitted a track for 6x10=60 Volume 1 compilation. We then traded sound material of which the first one was a cassette on ZSF and Therapie. Apperently they have different mixes, although I only have a copy of the Therapie release.

Then, in 1989, Merzbow played his first concerts in the Netherlands, on a tour organised by V2. One was at Diogenes in Nijmegen and earlier that afternoon we set up at an illegal radio station where he and I played together for 40 minutes. Freek Kinkelaar was at the control, adding tapes by Emil Beaulieu and SBOTHI. On The LP that I released only the first 20 minutes are used of this, and on the b-side are two transformtions of that sound material.

2009-2010 sees the celebration of twenty years of Kapotte Muziek, the first musical project of Frans de Waard. Expanded in 1993 with members Peter Duimelinks and in 1995 Roel Meelkop, this trio explores the world of micro electro-acoustic music, playing on waste found on the streets and with a fine addition of field recordings. Before 1993 Kapotte Muziek was largely known as a player in the field of industrial music and musique concrete. To celebrate their 25th anniversary they staged two nights, one at Extrapool in Nijmegen and one at Occi in Amsterdam and asked long term friends to pay hommage. This CD is a compilation of 'edited highlights' from both nights, displaying a variety of interests, old and new:

Radboud Mens offers a piece of drone music using 'three sinewave guitars', DMDN, as guest DJ present, played old and new tapes and vinyl from the past twenty five years of Kapotte Muziek in a striking collage of industrial sounds. Howard Stelzer, known for his extensive use of cassettes, restricted solely to cassettes from the past, while Jos Smolders showed up with his laptop and reel-to-reel machine to incorporate even dance music like moves. Asra and Asmus Tietchens, as well as Kapotte Muziek, use detailled improvisation on a variety of junkyard instrumentation and real instruments. An excellent compilation showing a true love of sound exploration by all involved.

First there is this one, which is compiled by my old friend Peter Zincken, who is always a bit sex obsessed, dealing with the penis. My piece is called 'Penis Ruis' and contains feedback. Nothing to download as there are still plans to release this as a CD, which will include the Kapotte Muziek piece. I also had a hand on the track by Meeuw, called 'Berelul', which he recorded at my place.

So I forgot something in June. On June the 1st 1987 I did a second installment of a xerox art at Parkzicht in Rotterdam. My diary says: "The second copy-art installation was planned for that evening (party of the Art-Academie of Rotterdam), but as we were not allowed to use any paper in the building, and outside the wind was to hard, this installation did not really appeared. Music that was made for this evening is later on used as Frag/Ele/Ment (Kapot Produkt 00Q). Kapotte Muziek did join however Thu 20 (also performing that night) on vocals in the last piece they played that evening (this piece is released on Harsh Ears Now!! 5 by Midas Tapes)."
Frag/Ele/Ment mentioned here was released in September 1987. A carton archive box, filled with 75 xeroxes, 20 slides and a one sided c60 tape. The idea was that anybody who bought one could use these in any form (attached to the wall, boxes, objects) and make his own installation. Some actually did, but I must admit I seen very few documentation. I used the xeroxes earlier this year when I did a display at Extrapool of record and tape covers as a background. The download contains the music and the booklet, not the xeroxes or the slides.

So I was having a look at Discogs yesterday and will devote some posts to stuff mentioned there, just to avoid questions about them.

First of all that needs to mentioned is the series 'Kapotte Muziek by…'. Initiated following a talk with Ralf Wehwosky, who came to our concert in Kaiserslautern (08-02-1997) and subsequently grew into a nice series of 7"s and later CDs. Starting to round up a few things here, here is some more stuff lost, or oherwise unavailable for this blog.

First there is the Kapotte Muziek track to this one, a 100 lockgroove compilation. I barerly remember which one it is when I play this 7", and I definetly don't have a back up on some master tape somewhere. I liked this one and the RRR 500, which has 500 lockgrooves, but when recently someone mentioned there is also now a 1000 lockgroove record, I must admit I was not interested at all. I am not a DJ or a 'musician' who use lockgrooves. I think I rather to do the difficult and create loops myself, I need them.

I wrote about the next story quite a lot, unfortunately. A.I.P.R. was a German label who asked me for a 7", which I gave him. This guy who released, phoned and said when he received the pressing, something was wrong: black vinyl, white label as opposed to white vinyl, black label. He was going to repressed this, and I asked him to mail me a wrong one anyway. Needless to say he never did. Bernard Gunther saw a copy of whatever version of this 7" for sale in a shop in Koblenz, and I asked him to buy one for me. I believe he wasn't bothered at all. I don't think he likes me.

Then the second gig was in Strahlsund, Germany at the excellent Garage Festival, which I believe no longer exists. Maybe we played longer than the recording tells us. Since Richard Ramirez invited us to work some collaboration, and since Kapotte Muziek was just a live trio by then, we thought of using some of the sound material he had send us, in a live concert. Each of us had reworkings of his material, and that we used along with our usual playing. This is also the concert that Roel Meelkop used in his Goem vs Kapotte Muziek CD. That was originally an idea from Dimitri from the Canadian label Hushush, when we played there in 2001, to combine Goem and Kapotte Muziek. We did try things out in a session once, which I edited to a piece called KGM (and which is included on the 'Not Lost' box, about which I will post later), which no-one liked, so then Roel did this one, based on these concert recordings. Both these years, on the same date, were something special. The first one was held at Extrapool (no doubt the place we played most so far in these 25 years) and for this occasion, where they opened also on the place next door, we installed ourselves on three different locations (venue, halfway and topfloor, if I remember) and played together without seeing eachother. I think Peter was downstairs to do the final and this is where the recording was made. Long gaps of silence! Odd indeed. Players were: Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard. The oldest one is released by V2. I was a volunteer at V2 when they were located in 's-Hertogenbosch. This compilation CD was made as a follow-up to the better 'CD for the Unstable Media'. I should play the entire CD to remember why I didn't like it. My piece had something to do with reverb creating space. I never liked the design either, as with much that V2 comes up with. I entirely lost interest in V2 and their 'interactive' media.

It became apparent that compilations with just music lost their appeal in the 80s, and it was time to thematic compilations, like 'Sex & Bestiality' or 'Anthems'. I mailed a newspaper page to friends with the request to use that in a piece of music dedicated to G.X. Jupitter-Larsen/The Haters. The whole thing was the first 'Korm Audio Art' release. It has music by The Haters, Vik Pavel/Sohne Onans, Falx Cerebri, Kapotte Muziek, Arthur Berkhoff, Odal, Comando Bruno, Une Le Wuerg Production and Klaus Groh. It came in a plastic bag, with two postcards (one by Vittore Baroni) and a match.

I think Peter was on holiday for this one. I also think Roel and me Dj-ed our favorite new wave records the night before on some Extrapool event on a boat. The Noisecape festival was in an empty factory in Schevingen (next to The Hague) and ran for a long day, organised by Mischa from Gallery Keller (where we once played as Goem in a cold winter of 1998). A look at various compilation CDRs containing works by Kapotte Muziek. In the mid 90s CDR became the true alternative to cassette releases. Also on a small scale, these could easily be produced.

First there is this one. A highly limited CDR produced by Staalplaat, in dedicated to Ciro Iamarco. He was the main of Staalplaat up until his death of aids in 1993. I came to Staalplaat in 1992, sort of to replace him. My piece was recorded using the Staalplaat coffee machine, since Ciro sure liked his capuccino, and the metal stairs Staalplaat had.

Hugo Mountinho of the Tragic Figures one day had the plan to release a 3LP set, with 'old guys', and Kapotte Muziek was to fill one side. This LP never materialized, also not when offered to Artware. It ended up on a double CDR on my own Bake Records. A lost classic, which had some great names: Gregory Whitehead, KK Null, Sudden Infant, Arcane Device and Blackhumour. My four pieces are all reworkings from the Anathesia project.

Still in Berlin, the day after Eimer we played at the Prater: a garden in East Berlin. At the main stage there was some fluxus do with Hennig Christiansen, and we played in some garage at the end. The first of two gigs we did in Berlin as part of Staalplaat's Sonderangebot festival. This one was staged at the Eimer, and the deal was 'collaboration'. On this night we played with Co Caspar. Today, my birthday, in 1988 I turned 23. I think my parents were on holiday and I spend the whole day compiling this tape. For some months I have been mailing out small parts of cassette tape with the request to send them back. They come in various groups and they were glued together as they came in. I know, a very John Cage concept, but quite nice. I then designed the cover, went to the copy shop and at the end of the day the tape was ready. There are worse things to do on your birthday.

Our only public concert in Japan was on this day, on the day of the opening of an exhibition called Amplitude Of Chance: The Horizon Of Occurances. Peter and Roel each had a piece in there. Since Roel had an accident just before we left I helped him building his installation. Others involved were Achim Wollscheid, Jio Shimuzo, Toshiya Tsunoda and Brandon Labelle. I don't have a recording of this concert, but there is a lengthy catalogue released with CD rom, from which this video was extracted.

Together with PBK I organised an anti AWB compilation, with on the USA side Illusion Of Safety, Reed Ghazala, Psy 231, Gustavo Pastre, PBK, Blowhole, Nux Vomica and Zan and the European/South African side Riders Of The Apocalypse, DMDN & PDM, Doc Wor Mirran, Kapotte Muziek, Sphinx, Factor X and Tuijnenburg & Hanselaar. Another not very brilliant moment is the compilation 6x10-60, which I released myself. There are three volumes, in plastic wallets with seperate xeroxed papers. Although the series has some great moments (Bourbonese Qualk, Merzbow, Le Syndicat), my track, the final track on the final volume is another affair of feedback noise. I uploaded only my own track, not the rest of compilation. I couldn't find it online elsewhere.

One of the very early works. I mailed the label Wegwerp tapes a fifteen minute tape, basically because I thought it would be great to have many short tapes and get some name recognition, but then I received this tape, in which the man behind the label, Berry Rikkerink (also of The Lost Attic fame), just used some sounds from us. We must assume the whole C15 is lost. Berry died in October 2007

n August 1996 Staalplaat organised a large scale event in Berlin, effectively marking the start of moving there entirely in 2003. In the month before they released a compilation CD/programm with the acts that were performing. No doubt they wouldn't like me to do free download of that CD, so only our track. I wrote about this piece before, but that was incorrect. For the CD we used a piece from our Russelsheim concert (26-05-1996) and called it 'Tweede Russelsheim' (second piece from Russelsheim). Which is odd, since I no longer recall why it was second as there seems no survival of this recording. You may have downloaded this from the previous post, but here it is again.

I spend some time this morning looking for this tape, which I already transferred to MP3 a long time (along with all the other releases by Korm Plastics from the cassette days), but I couldn't find it in my slightly disorganised environment, so no cover, but there is something to download. (update a few days later: here is the cover!). Anyway, this tape is my first more serious attempt to 'compose' music, using field recordings I made when on holiday in Austria with my parents, whom I drove crazy with my tape recorder. In a sort of attempt to be like the Hafler Trio I guess. See those titles. Oh well, I still love it and it was the first release on Korm Plastics Canada, my small enterprise with Not Half. There were a couple of more releases which I will also post later on. Since a weeks I am back in contact with Al Lincoln Roy, or Allen Conroy, of Not Half.

Since about 10 years I curate a project called Brombron for Extrapool and this week the guests have been Adam Bohman and Al Margolis. Part of the idea is to sell these series to other places, so we ended up in Het Poortgebouw in Rotterdam, a former squat, in a strange surrounding: it on the street where the Tour de France will start in 2 days. Peter suggested we should as well play as Kapotte Muziek, since it would be easy for him and Roel to be there, almost around their corner. Unfortunately Roel was so busy with work obligations that he didn't show up. A hot night (not as hot as the two others concerts we'll come across later this month - in fact the only other concerts in July), but we played a highly silent, part acoustic concert, which of course isn't on this line recording. Packaged in brown paper sleeve with small 16-page booklet made from the same paper. Edition of 100 copies. Side A: recorded March 1996, mixed April 1996.
In 1995 the label Cynistrose launched an international compilation project: the goal was to give sounds recorded in a special place (U.LP) to different artists and to let them rework the sounds and make an unique composition with them. Each participant (as Kapotte Muziek) was given sounds but also samples of matter (glass, wood, stone, rubber…) from this place. Kapotte Muziek also choose to compose a track with these matters.
Side B: sounds recorded in April and May 1995, composedin August and September 1995, mixed in November 1995.
"M.SL" is the first and last Sechres Mound studio recording. The composition is only based on field recordings made in the area of the SL mine; the sounds then were selected, edited and reworked. The goal of Sechres Mound was to reflect the past (active) and the present (inactive) atmosphere of the place. download

Kapotte Muziek played in Venlo, for many years the place where Roel Meelkop grew up. In an attempt to revive some stage for new music, a brave attempt was made and this night Kapotte Muziek played, then Staplerfahrer and then Zebra. A Sunday afternoon concert consisted of Roel Meelkop solo and me solo. A long weekend. Not many showed up, unfortunately, but we played well, we thought. A recording by Mike Kramer. Audioscoop was, or perhaps is, a series of events organised by Kim Laughs from Maastricht. I think we played the same afternoon as Das Synthetische Mischgewebe. Later on a 2LP set was released with various edits from these concerts. I did a Freiband concert at the presentation on the concert, for which I used sounds of the entire 2LP, called 'Capture' (along the idea of Captured Music by Selektion). Another day of workshops. This time in Berlin, organised by Geert-Jan Hobijn of Staalplaat for Podewil. I think BMB con also did one, but on a different day. We stayed in Berlin and the next day played a Goem concert and we were supposed to another Kapotte Muziek concert in a squat. It turned out they had no sound system and the room was so small, it could not fit the amount of people to pay our price. The Podewil workshop was great fun though. June the 1st 1987 at Parkzicht, Rotterdam, Holland. The second copy-art installation was planned for that evening (party of the Art-Academie of Rotterdam), but as we were not allowed to use any paper in the building, and outside the wind was to hard, this installation did not really appeared. Music that was made for this evening is later on used as Frag/Ele/Ment (Kapot Produkt 00Q). Kapotte Muziek did join however Thu 20 (also performing that night) on vocals in the last piece they played that evening (this piece is released on Harsh Ears Now!! 5 by Midas Tapes).

The night train arrives from Moscow and we are greeted by Dmitry who organised this tour. We leave our stuff at the train station and then go to the Majakovsky museum and then back to the train station for our next trip, to Yaroslavl, five hours from Moscow. The night train brings us to St Petersburg, with not much sleep due to school kids having fun all night and in my case a couch that isn't my length. St Petersburg is a different city than Moscow, the way it looks and acts. And the weather is much nicer. We walk all day and than play this concert at the Experimental Sound Gallery. Roel and Me again play solo and there is a concert by Kryptogen Rundfunk/Five Elements Music. Apparentely, as we will discover in a few days we do well with this concert... Rob Ovetz of the band Ultrasound lived in Den Haag for some time and organised the Den Haag Film Festival. I don't recall how many editions there were, but we played there in 2002, providing live music for film by Jurgen Reble, well-known for his collaborations with Thomas Koner. The real final gig was the next day, still in Seattle, when Your Host Bobby invited us to do another radio concert. A much cleaner recording this time, and one we thought of releasing. That never happened. Your Host Bobby did release a compilation cassette called "Demi-Quadrennial" on his own Host-age label, of which discogs says:
"Compiled from live guests and studio recordings made for 'Host-Age'. 'Host-Age' is a program devoted to the electronic folk arts and broadcast on KSER / Everett Washington. From Berkeley to San Francisco is not far, and then we played at The Chameloen bar, along with The Haters and Family Home Evening, who did an audience participation thing. After our concert a woman comes up to me, asks when we are supposed to play and said we already did. She came from LA with her boyfriend. It turns out to be Paula P.Orridge. Oh well.
