31-08-2004

Then the second gig was in Strahlsund, Germany at the excellent Garage Festival, which I believe no longer exists. Maybe we played longer than the recording tells us. Since Richard Ramirez invited us to work some collaboration, and since Kapotte Muziek was just a live trio by then, we thought of using some of the sound material he had send us, in a live concert. Each of us had reworkings of his material, and that we used along with our usual playing. This is also the concert that Roel Meelkop used in his Goem vs Kapotte Muziek CD. That was originally an idea from Dimitri from the Canadian label Hushush, when we played there in 2001, to combine Goem and Kapotte Muziek. We did try things out in a session once, which I edited to a piece called KGM (and which is included on the 'Not Lost' box, about which I will post later), which no-one liked, so then Roel did this one, based on these concert recordings. Truely a recycled gig. Players were: Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard. Gig 90 31-08-2004 Garage Festival, Strahlsund, Germany

31-08-1996

Both these years, on the same date, were something special. The first one was held at Extrapool (no doubt the place we played most so far in these 25 years) and for this occasion, where they opened also on the place next door, we installed ourselves on three different locations (venue, halfway and topfloor, if I remember) and played together without seeing eachother. I think Peter was downstairs to do the final and this is where the recording was made. Long gaps of silence! Odd indeed. Players were: Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard. XX-XX-1993-2002

And here is a bunch of compilation CDs with Kapotte Muziek.

The oldest one is released by V2. I was a volunteer at V2 when they were located in 's-Hertogenbosch. This compilation CD was made as a follow-up to the better 'CD for the Unstable Media'. I should play the entire CD to remember why I didn't like it. My piece had something to do with reverb creating space. I never liked the design either, as with much that V2 comes up with. I entirely lost interest in V2 and their 'interactive' media.
Details:
'Artificial Space' on The Great World In Environment And Acceleration (CD - 1993)
V2 Archief V218

A Japanese guy Suzuki Shunya asked for some tips on composing with noise and mailed me some sounds. I did this piece and he didn't like it. Oh well. It ended up on this UK noise compilation.
Kapot Produkt OCA: 'Struc/Tur/Es' on Stinky Horse Fuckers (CD - 1993)
SHF CD 001

I got two invitations for compilations at the same time, and both were dealing with bodies. I did two tracks of them and mailed both labels both tracks. I think I was pretty clear in as to was to use what, they failed. I think Minus Habens got it right and Anomalous Records got it wrong. Anyway, I am smoking a pipe on this piece:
Details:
'The Body In Decay Part 1' on Body Frequencies (CD - 1995)
Minus Habens MHCD 025

One day the postman delivered a box with what looked like dirt and rubbish. They were acoustic materials which I was to use to create music, about some abadonned factory site. I always thought that was a great idea, and this was a fine compilation. See also here
Details:
Untitled Cut on Regeneration - Degenerescence (2CD - 1997)
Kaon (no cataloguenumber)

A pretty standard noise track, although it harks back to my Musik Ohne Ende tape.
Details:
'Metalle' on Release Your Mind Volume 2 (3CD - 1998)
Relapse RR6961-2

A remix of Disinformation by Kapotte Muziek appeared on this double CD.
Details:

The final two are linked together. On the first I rework sounds by Francois Douris and Cisfinitum and on the second sounds by Alexei Borisov. Both compilations from Russia and both are the earliest to use a computer to create them.

XX-XX-1986

Also part of the Blossoming Noise set (I have 2 left) was this august release, a particular early favorite. The a-side is a recycling (as remixing was called back then) of the 'Electrocute' cassette and the b-side was a new piece of slowed down 'other' music. Released by my own Opus Dei Society (of which I will do a blog on its own soon) and Midas Music, cover shown here. Not for download.

XX-XX-2001

More CDR compilations here. The first is by Radbound Mens' label Hond In De Goot, on which he released a few great noise releases. The Death Of Rock N Roll was originally for somebody else's label (maybe Colin of Zion Train? I am not sure) and ended years later up on CDR. 'White Haze' has nothing to do with cocaine, but I was thinking of 'Purple Haze' and Jimi Hendrix.
Details:
‘White Haze’ on Non Stop Noise Party (The Death Of Rock N Roll) (CDR – 2001)

Also on Hond In The Goot a compilation of remixes of Mens' band Technoise. I actually have three mixes, also on as Captain Black and one as Quest. Both not included in the download.
Details:
‘Hardware Remix’ on Technoise (CDR – 2001)

An edit by Roel Meelkop from our concert at Worm concert 21-01-2000

Radio Worm 021

Six pieces recorded using sound material by an obscure UK band Expose Your Eyes. Also Nocturnal Emissions, Kazumoto Endo, Hyware, and Lasse Marhaug are taking part.
Details:
‘Expose Your Ears Part 1-6’ on ‘Expose Your Eyes – Collaborates (CDR – 2001)

I am not sure if this was ever proper released, but Tore Boe send a record in the mail, no cover, no enveloppe and asked people to remix it. Two CDRs in a private edition were made.
Details:
‘Unexpectedly Gallawohurs’ on Tore Honore Boe & Friends: Serum Recycled (2xCDR)

And finally a compilation that I never received a copy of, but I bought it from a French mailorder. Odd. Recorded using a plastic bag.

23-08-1986

It became apparent that compilations with just music lost their appeal in the 80s, and it was time to thematic compilations, like 'Sex & Bestiality' or 'Anthems'. I mailed a newspaper page to friends with the request to use that in a piece of music dedicated to G.X. Jupitter-Larsen/The Haters. The whole thing was the first 'Korm Audio Art' release. It has music by The Haters, Vik Pavel/Sohne Onans, Falx Cerebri, Kapotte Muziek, Arthur Berkhoff, Odal, Comando Bruno, Une Le Wuerg Production and Klaus Groh. It came in a plastic bag, with two postcards (one by Vittore Baroni) and a match.

I think Peter was on holiday for this one. I also think Roel and me Dj-ed our favorite new wave records the night before on some Extrapool event on a boat. The Noisecape festival was in an empty factory in Schevingen (next to The Hague) and ran for a long day, organised by Mischa from Gallery Keller (where we once played as Goem in a cold winter of 1998). A somehow more cruder concert, due to the environment, I think. Players were: Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard. Gig 87 23-08-2003 Noisecape Festival, Scheveningen, The Netherlands

21-08-2000

We never played big outdoor festivals a lot, but this was one. The day before we played as Goem three shorts inside a container for 12 or so people, and then as Kapotte Muziek in a tent. I guess the organisers (I no longer recall who they were) expected something different. Players were: Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard. XX-XX-1997-2001

A look at various compilation CDRs containing works by Kapotte Muziek. In the mid 90s CDR became the true alternative to cassette releases. Also on a small scale, these could easily be produced.

First there is this one. A highly limited CDR produced by Staalplaat, in dedicated to Ciro Iamarco. He was the main of Staalplaat up until his death of aids in 1993. I came to Staalplaat in 1992, sort of to replace him. My piece was recorded using the Staalplaat coffee machine, since Ciro sure liked his capuccino, and the metal stairs Staalplaat had.
Details:
'Capuciro' on Ciro Iamarco (CDR - 1998)
Staalplaat (no cataloguenumber)

One of the first releases Lunhare did on CDR was a compilation called 'Lookahead'. My piece uses a turntable. If I remember correctly.
Details:
'Schleifen' on Lookahead (CDR - 1999)

A track from our concert at Keller, see also 22-05-1997, which was released n this label which, I think, only released this, as a rememberance of various evenings.
A short edit.
Details:
‘Enige Keller’ on In Keller (CDR – 1997)
Gold Coast 01 (no cataloguenumber)

Hugo Mountinho of the Tragic Figures one day had the plan to release a 3LP set, with 'old guys', and Kapotte Muziek was to fill one side. This LP never materialized, also not when offered to Artware. It ended up on a double CDR on my own Bake Records. A lost classic, which had some great names: Gregory Whitehead, KK Null, Sudden Infant, Arcane Device and Blackhumour. My four pieces are all reworkings from the Anathesia project.
Details:
'Vier Stucke Im Alten Stil' on Restoration (2xCDR - 2001)
Bake Records 021

I didn't upload all of these compilations, no doubt none of which is available, but I did upload a folder with the Kapotte Muziek tracks from these compilations.

XX-XX-1989-1990

More compilations. The first one is from 1989 and I believe this label used the wrong track for this. I submitted two tracks, for two compilations. Or some such.
Details:
Kapot Produkt 0AR: 'Audio Plagio 3 (Calamities)' on Noise From Nowhere II (c90 - 1989)
New Flesh Tapes 11

More sampled works on this compilation…
Details:
Kapot Produkt 0AU: "Audio Plagio 5" on Placebo 1 (c60 - 1990)-
Art Brut 012

As well as here, the rhythm loop was from the Soviet Sex track on the flexi disc that came with Vinyl magazine.
Details:
Kapot Produkt 0AZ: 'Audio Plagio' on Rap 'N Crack (c60 - 1990)
Dedali Opera opus 4

One of my more favourite pieces was this one. Heavily influenced by the then recent Asmus Tietchens LP 'Notturno'.
Details
Kapot Produkt OBD: 'Piano Studie 1' on Gears=Sex (c60 - 1990 - edition of 100 copies)
Empty Records mt 076

This was one of those 'pay along' compilations. It was composed (and paid) along with Dead Parliament (one of the many names used by Bart Hanselaar). Also a favourite of mine. Here is the score for the piece.

XX-XX-1987-1990

More compilations…

The first one seems to be lost. Hard to find on the internet and I can't find my own copy of it. Released by Markus Schwill, who was then living almost around the corner in Geramny and who would drop by every now and then.
Details
Kapot Produkt 00R: 'Vervuiling' on A Benefiz Compilation For Greenpeace (c60 - Dec. 1987)
Schutt und Asche (no.catno.)
Kapotte Muziek Unit 02: Electronics, concept and recording

And another one, which I do have, but it doesn't play properly anymore. From my diary:
Details:
Kapot Produkt 00T: This should have been a 3 minute endless tape on Empty Records, but instead it was used for a collaboration under the name 'Death Pact International', no title (3 minute endless - 1989 - edition of 50 copies)
Empty Records MT 068

Also pretty obscure is this one. I don't know where my own music is in here!
Details
Kapot Produkt 0AF: Our contribution for a compilation on Ache Records was used in the taperelease 'Entwurfe Zu Einem Ich' by a group called 'Unanimous Anomymous Support'. (c90 - 1989)
Ache Records

If I am not mistaken, then my contribution to this was a shabby remix of Chris & Cosey's 'Heartbeat', from the first album. Not that you would recognize it.
Details
Kapot Produkt 0AQ: 'Heartbeat' on Heartbeat Vol.2 (c30 - 1990)

Lots of noise. I never shared their interest in the exteme politics, I must admit. But Trev Ward from this label was a nice guy.

XX-XX-1985-1986-1987

I just realized that I will not be finished with my long list of tapes when we reach October 1st and this archive is supposed to be done. So to 'speed' some things the next few days a few compilations for which I never had proper release dates. We start with the oldest:

I am still contact with Holger Dill Productions, recently writing liner notes for an If, Bwana re-issue he did. I was on his third volume of a series called Poltergeist.
Details:
Kapot Produkt 9: 'Speaking Ghosts' on Poltergeist III (c60 - 1985 ?)
Dill Productions dill 019
(booklet with 1 visual from Kapotte Muziek)

This was more mail art than a real music release. 60 one minute tracks. The guy who ripped this, didn't bother to seperate the tracks, which I guess is indeed not easy. It was not for sale:
Details:
Kapot Produkt 11: 'Electroshock Part 3' on To Post A Tape Vol.2 (c60 - 1986
© ed. of 61 copies, not for sale)
Minimart Production/Fraction Studio

Another rare example of a politically inspired release, this animal rights compilation, where we stand out as an odd-ball by a million miles. Lots of (great) punk music. I was never a vegetarian - maybe its time to admit that now.
Details:
Kapot Produkt 13: 'Animal Torture Part 1 & 2' on 1.242.285 (c90 © 1986 - ed. of 250 copies)
Y.U.R.A. Kollektief yur 001
(booklet with 1 visual from Kapotte Muziek) (all benefits for the dutch
animal liberation front)

An attempt to create serious avant-garde music with feedback sounds and collage as form. It was inspired by the title I guess. I don't think I succeeded very well.
Details:
Kapot Produkt 32: 'Sounds From Unknown Source' on Third Generation Serious Music (c60 - 1986)
MarzidovsekMinimalLaboratorium MML 32
(Booklet with 1 visual from Kapotte Muziek)
(We submitted a longer track than featured here. The total piece can be found on Kapot Produkt 0AA)

I recently met Al Margolis from Sound Of Pig when he was here recording the Brombron project with Adam Bohman. We talked a lot about the good ol' days of cassettes, though we both couldn't remember this track on his compilation:

One of more favorite latter day tape releases is this one. It was a recycling of some older stuff, but I must admit I no longer know what it was. Later it was re-issued on 'The Malevolent Ear', and you can buy a download on Itunes and other stores, so nothing free today.

Bart Hanselaar's label Seiten Sprung Aufnahmen did a whole series of short split cassettes and Kapotte Muziek was on the second. I always liked this piece, so it can be found on 'History Is What Was'. The visual component is long lost.
Details:

Still in Berlin, the day after Eimer we played at the Prater: a garden in East Berlin. At the main stage there was some fluxus do with Hennig Christiansen, and we played in some garage at the end. According to a friend of whom, who was there, but not necessarily into my music, it was unbelievable loud. He still talks about it. Nothing such on these recordings! Players were: Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard. Gig 38 11-08-1996 Prater, Berlin, Germany

10-08-1996

The first of two gigs we did in Berlin as part of Staalplaat's Sonderangebot festival. This one was staged at the Eimer, and the deal was 'collaboration'. On this night we played with Co Caspar. A pretty long concert, as towards the end, when we thought all was done, Caspar played for some more time solo. Players were: Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard. Gig 37 10-08-1996 Eimer, Berlin, Germany

Oh, I should have posted this a few days ago. Opus Dei Society was my label, heavily influenced by the esthetic of Broken Flag. Twenty-three releases in total. Maybe one day I'll make small blog with them all. This particular compilation has a track by Kapotte Muziek, and I am not sure ever why its untitled. Maybe it just looked cool?

08-08-1988

Today, my birthday, in 1988 I turned 23. I think my parents were on holiday and I spend the whole day compiling this tape. For some months I have been mailing out small parts of cassette tape with the request to send them back. They come in various groups and they were glued together as they came in. I know, a very John Cage concept, but quite nice. I then designed the cover, went to the copy shop and at the end of the day the tape was ready. There are worse things to do on your birthday.

Today of course is the day that Kapotte Muziek played their very first concert, in Christian student room in front of one person, who, we think, didn't like it very much. This concert is released on Opus Dei Society (the very same day) and now available as part of the Blossoming Noise box set.

08-12-2001

I just put online my new website, and then somebody watched over the published list of gigs - what dedication - and spotted, entirely right of course - that I forgot to post a concert here. So here it is. A workshop in Budapest in 2001. This download incudes both a concert recording and various sounds from the workshop. Players were: Peter Duimelinks, Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard. Gig 71 08-12-2001 ¬VIII. PAUSE-SIGN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC FESTIVAL at Mu Theatre, Budapest Hungary
